Step 3: Add 3-4″ of Packed Gravel Base. Unless you don't mind an uneven patio, the gravel base is critical. It will keep your patio nice and flat for the long term and support your stones so they don't crack and break. This is the patio's foundation, and if you want a professional finished product, don't skimp here.

The best way to do this is the 'ball test'. Take a handful of blended aggregate and add a few ounces of water to it. Work around material in both hands to ensure no dry aggregate remains. Form aggregate into ball by hand and apply pressure. The result should be an aggregate ball with a doughy consistency that holds together.

Find the path of least resistance, with a downward slope. On my project, the bed of gravel for the concrete was already in. I just had to remove an inch or so to get the drains at the right height. I dug a trench deep enough to accommodate the elbow, and tunneled under the concrete forms and around the corner, following along the side of the shed.

Step 4: Install Edging Hopefully by now you already know what type of edging you'll be using. We commonly use redwood bender board for DG patios, since it is unobtrusive, easy to use with many different patio styles, and holds up well over time. You can also use steel edging, pavers, boulders, and more.

2. Level out the stone dust where it was, as needed. A square trowel may be used. The stone may not be perfectly flat on the bottom.so it may need more stone dust on one side, less on another. Adjust accordingly and then place the stone back where it goes. 3. Check its level, in relation to the stones next to it.

Lay down your base of 20mm crushed rock at a minimum depth of 50mm. Spread and level the 20mm crushed rock using the back of a rake or straight length of timber. It is not advised to use a rake with the prongs down, as they tend to pull the larger rocks out leaving patches of stony material. Water the crushed rock LIGHTLY with a hose. Do not soak.

Hand tampers are acceptable for extremely tight spaces and nooks, but it is always recommended to use a 1-ton (minimum) double drum roller for the majority of a path's surface to achieve proper compaction. The path's base layer is essential to compaction and drainage, and it serves as the foundation for the path itself.
