Before you ever touch the wheel polish, you must make sure that the wheels are spotless—if there is any dirt on the wheel surface, it will be ground into the wheel with the polish and potentially make them much worse. These two items seen above helped the process substantially.

Aluminum melts easily, and if you were to try to grind down aluminum, it would start to melt and the aluminum would coat the wheel. The stone would grind the aluminum for a while, but particles would start getting embedded in the pores of the stone. And the next time the stone comes around, there's no grit exposed, only little bits of aluminum.

Probably the best way to get the powder coating off with the tires still on is to sandblast the wheels, but that leaves the aluminum a bit of a mess for future polishing or refinishing. But the right way is to remove the tires, have them professionally chemically stripped, and polished. Good luck. Ted Mooney, P.E. Striving to live Aloha

- This is where I prefer to switch to wet-sanding. As I move to the 800 grit paper I choose to wet-sand as the paper seems to gum-up rather quickly due to the fine powder produced. You can blast aluminum wheels. Use finer sand for a fine finish, or coarse for a badly pitted wheel. After blasting you could go over the outer rim edge with different grits of sandpaper to end up with a decent looking quick fix. I'll try to put up a pic later of some I did. Won't be all that expensive either. Sandblasting chrome on top of aluminum is risky since the aluminum is so much softer than the chrome, if you open up a blister or an edge in the plating, the sand will dig a pit in that area before the chrome surrounding it will come off. You'll end up with wavy wheels. Not a good idea if you are going to ...
